Various Offers from South Texas College of Law
First, my sympathy to everyone. It's a rough spot to be in, and
Loyola-New Orleans' faculty, administration, and students deserve a
whole lot of respect for how well everyone is responding.
My compliments to the UH folks, and to Professor Muller at UNC as well.
Some readers of this blog might not be aware of the fact that the UH Law
Center took a serious hit in Tropical Storm Allison a couple of years
back. So they know better than most people how important it is to pull
together in tough times.
Now, some business. I teach at the South Texas College of Law, in
downtown Houston (4 miles or 8-10 minutes from the UH Law Center). We
have both a day and a night program, and a very wide range of course
offerings for both. Though we don't seem to have gotten the information
to this blog yet, South Texas is accepting -- and already has signed up
quite a few -- 2L and 3L students from both Tulane and Loyola-New
Orleans. I understand that South Texas is waiving tuition and fees,
and that the number of students we will take is limited only by
individual course enrollment maximums (mostly, available classroom
seating). Classes already have started, but I'm scheduling makeup
sessions for the Louisana students I'm told have already joined my
Family Law course. I'm sure other professors here are doing the same.
I know that faculty, staff and students at South Texas have been putting
together housing and other assistance for their New Orleans friends and
colleagues, and I trust we can all get coordinated to do that most
effectively. I'm sure people much higher up the academic food chain
that I are already working on that.
I also have a couple of offers that I want to make sure get out. First,
Dick Dole (UH Law faculty) and I co-own a modest but nice beach house in
Galveston. Two bedrooms, fully furnished. The only down side is that
it's just over an hour's drive to the UH or South Texas campus.
Available free of charge now to any Tulane or Loyola faculty member and
family.
Second, my home (15 minutes from South Texas, 20-25 minutes from UH) has
a nice semi-detached efficiency apartment. Cable TV, wireless internet
capable, more-or-less private entrance. Suitable for a female* student
or single faculty member. Available on same terms.
*This is my spouse's contribution to the email. Something to do with
the way the place is decorated.
Take care, folks.
