I'm Here All Week. Tell Your Friends.

A
friend who is watching the PBS series "The Jewish Americans" told me that last night's program included the story of a German-Jewish immigrant who became the Chief of the Acoma Pueblo Indian tribe. Yup, that's right: a Jewish Indian chief.

This story is notable for many reasons, not the least of them that it permits me to tell one of the perhaps three jokes that I've ever been able to remember.

So Joel Rabinowitz, this Jewish guy, falls in love with Bird-in-the-Night, an American Indian girl. They get married and soon decide to have a baby. This is when things get tough. Joel's parents insist that any grandchild of theirs must have a Jewish name. Bird-in-the-Night's parents tell Bird that they'll disown her if she doesn't give their grandchild an Indian name.

When the baby's born, they name her "Smoked Whitefish."
