Kiva.org: Lend an Online Hand

D
o you know about Kiva.org?

It is an online service that allows you to make a microloan to a small business of your choice in a developing country.

Right now, in my portfolio, I've got $100 out to Rafiga Najafova's clothing store in Baku, Azerbaijan, and $50 out to Fatima Doré's food production business in Ndjamena, Chad.

(This, by the way, is what I do with most of the the paltry advertising revenue I generate on this blog.)

Go over to Kiva.org and click around. If you've got a bit of money collecting dust in a paypal account or something, why not spread the wealth a little?

Gee, we need that kind of thing for US small busniess'. I know many people here in Vermont that are barely surviving the massive inflation the Fed has engineered. Many small business' are going under because banks won't lend to them since they are too small...

I have been Kiva-ing for a while now and think it's a great program. I balance it with donorschoose.org in order to also give locally. This year on Kiva, I supported a woman in sub-Sarharan Africa and a fifth grade class in Carrboro, North Carolina. Both experiences have been rewarding and both types of giving are necessary. The woman in Africa has paid back 350.00 of the 500.00 I loaned. The class I supported locally wrote me a bunch of letters thanking me for my support and telling me how it had helped them better learn "literacy." I think this type of giving offers the most promise for creating a new type of committed donor.

Thanks for reminding me. I had known about the site, but hadn't loaned anything yet. So far I'm supporting a motorcycle transport business in Cambodia and cattle raising in Azerbaijan. I'm going to get the kids into it as a way to learn more about the world and to see how they can make a real impact on someone's life.

Thanks, Eric- it's a very intereting looking site. I'm glad to learn of it. Steve- it's funny- I also donated to the cattle raising in Azerbijan project w/o having seen your comment.

Eric--How cool is that? I had no idea this site existed, and I'll be sure to remember them in circle of organizations I support.

Would you please keep us posted on how well "your" businesses are doing?
