Listen to two native North Carolinians pronounce North Carolina county names for you. Then practice.
Try "Rutherford."

I have heard a mountain man say "Rutherfordton". This guy would know.
You don't say "roo" therfordton.
You say, "ruh" therfordton. Ruh, like "duh".
Ther is "thur" as in Thursday.
Ford, is more like "ferd". Ton, is like "tun"
That way, it just flows. Ruh ther ferd tun. If you try to say it like "roo" and "ford" it doesn't sound right.
