Was Karl Rove Really a Genius . . . or Just the Beneficiary of a Loose Nail
He is a genius, right? I mean, everyone agrees, right? He won South Carolina for Bush in the 2000 GOP primary by smearing McCain. That took "genius." His fingerprints seemed to be all over the swiftboating of Kerry in '04. That took "genius," right?
Okay, so '06 didn't go so well. Maybe it was because he was distracted by L'affaire Libby.
Maybe it's time to re-assess the "genius" of Karl Rove. Just think, if not for a horribly drafted butterfly ballot, Gore wins the White House in '00, right?
"For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost.
For want of a horse, the battle was lost.
From loss of the battle, a war was lost."

That "for want of a nail" poem always reminds me how improbable our current quagmire really was, and how it can all be traced back to a single irresponsible decision by a single irresponsible person:
-The U.S. invaded Iraq only because Bush was President after 9/11.
-Bush was President after 9/11 only because the 2000 election could be stolen.
-The 2000 election could be stolen only because the margin was so close.
-The margin was so close only because the Gore campaign was so weak.
-The Gore campaign was so weak only because the administration seemed so tarnished.
-The administration seemed so tarnished only because Bill Clinton was impeached.
-Clinton was impeached only because he accepted a blowjob from Monica Lewinsky.
Now, none of these events logically follow (Clinton should not have been impeached even if...; the administration should not have seemed so tarnished even if...; etc.). And none of this absolves the actors immediately responsible for these events. But none of these improbable events could have occurred if not for the previous event...none, that is, except for that one unforced error that snowballed into history.
