Guess What I'm Describing Now
They seem wholly unprepared . . . wholly unserious in their thoughts and approach . . . they seem locked into habits that no longer pertain, and absorbed by the small picture of partisan advancement at the expense of the big picture, which is that this nation is in trouble and needs their help . . . they are sunk in the superficial.
Is it Bush and Cheney? Is it the GOP? How 'bout Big Pharma?
No, silly. It's the Democrats, of course. Peggy Noonan has it all right here.

I agree Noonan's piece engaged in her knee-jerk bashing of the Democrats, but what's really remarkable is that Krugman today (behind the Times firewall) is arguing we should simply leave and Noonan's main point is so far from that. She concluded:
"Right now, in the deepest levels of the American government, intelligence and military planners should be ordered to draw up serious plans for an American withdrawal, and serious strategies for dealing with the realities withdrawal will bring. It would not be the worst thing if the Maliki government knew those plans were being drawn up. It might concentrate the mind.
"What is paramount is a hard, cold-eyed and even brutal look at America's interests. We have them. I'm not sure they've been given sufficient attention the past few years. In fact, I am sorry to say I believe they have not."

As a life-long yellow-dog Democrat who opposed Bush's oil-war from the beginning, who believes Bush is a moron and Cheney is evil, I ask you to tell me, so I may sleep better tonight, what IS the Democrat's plan for Iraq (other than a few brave, scattered, and largely ignored folks like Teddy K. and John Edwards)?
