Macho and Meta-Macho
The manager shook hands with his players, patted them on the back, thanked them for essentially ending the race in the AL East. These were the first Yankees since 1951 to sweep the Red Sox in a five-game series, and now Torre's eyes were moistening.Note that Klapisch reported that Torre was "close to tears," which is apparently what grown sportswriters say when they mean "crying."The manager said he was "emotional" after Monday's 2-1 win over Boston, which is what grown men say when they're close to tears.

Joey Cora cried when the Mariners were finally eliminated from the playoffs in 1995. He sat in the dugout and sobbed. I saw a photo of him in the clubhouse later and he was still crying.
Several years later, when he was traded and a bunch of we females were upset, I guy said to me "Girls just like Cora because he cried." And I guess he was right. But maybe female Seattle fans are different from female Yankee fans.

Torre cries all the time. The tears were on his face, so he was close to tears. Or something.
As you probably know from that old movie Hank Toms was in (A League of Our Own): "There's no crying in baseball."
