Judge Edward Becker Passes Away.

J
ust learned that 3rd Circuit judge Edward Becker has died.

How sad.

Judge Becker was not only an absolute delight as a judge, but one of the kindest, most generous people I've ever known.

I worked with Eric when he was arguing cases to the Third Circuit as an AUSA in New Jersey.

He remarked from time to time how much he enjoyed oral argument before Judge Becker, in particular.

But one story stands out.

Eric, a master word-smith and great at turning a phrase, was standing before a panel with Judge Becker arguing why the court had to rule for the government.

As his argument unfolded, Eric dropped in one of those turns-of-phrase.

And Judge Becker said, "that's a Mullerism."

There could no greater compliment for an advocate. And, IMHO, no greater mark of Judge Becker's own sense of humility and humanity.

He was a remarkable jurist - smart, decent, hardworking, and just. This is a terrible loss for the Third Circuit.

As my Uncle he was always bigger than life. Always warm and remembered all the important details. He will be missed sorely by all of us.
