Jeep Assault at UNC - Chapel Hill

I
am nearly speechless about the jeep attack on the UNC campus yesterday.

The spot the assailant chose was the very center of the campus -- a pedestrian zone that sits between the main campus store, the main campus dining hall, the main library, and a couple of other buildings. In the noon hour it's just mobbed with students, faculty, and staff. Not infrequently I'm over there in the noon hour myself; there's a Jamba Juice in the dining hall where I like to get smoothies.

At the time of the attack, I was at the law school, listening to a presentation on the Fourth Amendment by GWU professor (and Volokh Conspiracy blogger) Orin Kerr. We had no idea that any of this was happening, because the law school sits on a different part of campus.

We will know, in time, whether the initial reports of a terrorist motivation are accurate, and how mentally stable the driver is.

For now, I'm mostly just thankful that so few people were injured, and that none of the injuries is life-threatening. I wish all of the injured students a speedy recovery.

this was about as harmful an event as could have happened on this campus right now. I groaned when I heard the perpetrator's name--and fretted even more when I heard the alleged motives behind the attack. I worry, now more than ever, about the safety (both mental and physical) of muslim students on this campus. I can be called a bleeding heart for it, but I'll take that. The attack was awful and must have been absolutely terrifying for the students who congregated around the pit. I don't intend to distract from that. But I certainly hope that all displeasure and disgust is directed at the perpetrator alone, and not at those who may have similar names, backgrounds, religious beliefs, and associations. That's the best reaction this student body can possibly have to this heinous act.

There's an AP story up on this now.

The bloviating on this event is going to extend far outside of UNC, I fear. I can't imagine worse timing for something like this, with events like this being staged to whip up anti-Muslim frenzy.

No surprise, here. Another textbook case of a follower of the most intolerant religion in the world showing its true colors. Just wondering if this was part of his Peaceful Internal Struggle Formerly Known As Jihad?

Now, it's time for you Dhiminnis to go about pretending it's an isolated event. Just like every other isolated act of hatred and intolerance committed against westerners by Mohammedeans. Try as you might, you can't ignore the common factor -- Islam. I'll stand back now and watch your mental and verbal gymnastics as you defend him and them.

And, consider this, would you be so eager to defend a Christian driving an SUV into a crowd of Muslims as "retribution" for 9/11? I don't think so. It's almost laughable to consider your reactions. But why not? Mohammed stated that was his reason for this attack.

I think the little prick should be wiped down with bacon fat, shoved up against the nearest wall and shot with an Israeli bullet before night fall. Clear guilt and admission with plenty of witnesses.

Not bad; a little too unhinged to be completely believable, but I give it an 8.5. I could almost feel the spittle spraying out of my monitor.

That should go without saying. It should be obvious to all Americans, regardless of political leanings and to anyone anywhere who has some concept of justice. It's a disturbing commentary on our times that not only does it need to be said, it has to be prefaced by disclaimers (and judging by 'chapelhillconservative', even with them, it can provoke an angry response).

In the game of tit for tat the US is way ahead, thousands of dead civilians ahead.
