I'm Pitching An Idea for the Next "Oprah" Show ...
... a show in which Oprah shines the light not on some other industry, but on herself. James Frey's book would have languished in obscurity and meager sales if she had not hand-picked it for super-stardom. What I want to hear from Oprah is not how and why she was wronged and duped by somebody else, but why she was so credulous about the book's claims. A little more introspection and a little less blame.
Maybe a session with Dr. Phil is in order.

I was less disturbed by her credulousness in the first instance; the book, though pretty transparent and laughable as an account of recovery from addiction, is published by a reputable house and she's just a talk show host. What bothered me was her defense of it when she knew it was false -- the idea that truth doesn't matter as long as we all get a (televised, of course) emotional catharsis. Just as ridiculous was her fabricated about-face. I could even - barely - have bought an apology to the audience, in which she said "Sorry - it didn't seem that important to me, but it obviously is to you, and I misjudged." What I can't stomach is her staged "On second thought, I'm outraged and personally betrayed." This is false, even for her -- and I find her show pretty much phony from start to finish. Of course, hyping and then trashing the book is a no-lose proposition if all you're trying to produce is so-called "good TV." She gets two shows out of it, instead of one -- kind of like having a show about losing weight, then gaining it, then losing it....
