Living the Good Life in the Triangle, Far-Right-Wing Version

I
have a guest-post today at a local (Orange County, NC) politics blog about the extreme right-wing rants that grace the pages of what is supposed to be a high-gloss local "living the good life" feel-good magazine. Check it out.

UPDATE: A commenter, speaking of the original title of this post, which was "Living the Good Life in the Triangle, Wingnut Version," says: "Use of the word 'wingnut' speaks volumes. Eric obviously does not think this guy is even near the realm of the reasonable."

It is true that I don't think many of the views Bernie Reeves expresses in his column are "near the realm of the reasonable." The commenter is right, though, that the word "wingnut" was nasty and ill-advised. I apologize to Mr. Reeves for using that term to describe his views, which in my view speak for themselves without the need for any such derogatory adjective.

Thanks for bringing this to your local readers' attention. I'm going to call some advertisers, too.

BTW, in another article you didn't mention, Bernie endorsed the idea of using tactical nuclear weapons in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. He outdoes himself every week.

Nothing not standard conservative fare. Your characterization of the race quote was taken out of context. He fairly characterizes what Bill Cosby said and agrees with it. You put the worst possible spin on what he said.

Do you teach your students that the best way to win an argument is to begin by recharacterizing the opponent's argument to make it as weak and offensive as possible? That appears to be the modus operandi on this blog.

I run one of the Chapel Hill businesses Eric mentions and have posted my response on the original blog.

Use of the word "wingnut" speaks volumes. Eric obviously does not think this guy is even near the realm of the reasonable.

Agree or disagree, but calling someone a wingnut suggests a lack of understanding about the whole perspective--esp. given pulling random quotes without analysis. A major lack of respect, and it is uncalled for.

Agreed, and thanks. I agree that letting things speak for themselves is sufficient. On rereading those statements, some of them (though not all) really do go outside the bounds of reason. Of course, it is important to recognize that this sort of stuff has a good deal of hyperbole as a rhetorical stock-in-trade. That may not be a good idea, but that is an important part of understanding the rhetoric.

Good investigative reporting. Very interesting.

I guess to be more clear: My opinion is that hyperbole, esp. in print, is daggum irresponsible on this guy's part. It's certainly a rhetorical flair, but not one that is terribly appropriate.
