I Believe This Is Called "The Base."

T
he student newspaper at Bob Jones University is calling for the gradual withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

I would say that support for the war is slipping a tad bit.

Oh Smack! As Jon Stewart would say, maybe those kids ate a big plate of crazy for lunch.

By the way, did you notice that the Talkback re: Thanksgiving is a bit, ummm, stale for December 1? I need more along the lines of glass-dropping-in-dining-hall or google-device-wearing-in-lieu-of-arm to stay entertained.

It's just because they want them for the attack on Massachusetts. Someone has to stop the liberals!

I'm all for getting the US out or Iraq responsibly and am fairly certain we have no business being there in the first place. Some may view this Collegian editorial as an argument that the pro-war base is crumbling. I see it as another set of illogical contortions trying to spin the situation into some sort of justified victory for imposing US will.

The editorial says:

The United States can't really expect to make things perfect before ending its Middle East visit

That’s a laugh. Has anyone been accusing the US of going after anything like perfection? Maybe we should settle for it not being a perfect embarrassment. And really are we just “visiting” the Middle East – that’s a good spin, like we’re there for tea and crumpets. If someone “visited” my house as we’re visiting the Middle East I’d be calling it armed assault and breaking and entering. The spin rhetoric might be funny if it weren’t so sad. How about calling it an invasion and a war rather than a visit and a job? Next they’re going to be calling it missionary work.

They continue:

No, the anti-war protesters are coming too late. Now that we're in Iraq, we have to responsibly finish the job

Why? Must every job be finished? Even jobs that you realize half-way through are horrible mistakes? Of course stopping in the middle of this job would require the ability to admit that mistakes had been made. Good luck getting that out of the base. And I agree we should finish up whatever is done there responsibly; too bad it wasn’t begun that way with world support, legitimate justification and the proper number of troops.

Of course this editorial was only written by a couple of brainwashed college kids doped up on Jesus and false patriotism, but the reality is that they are as entrenched in the “base” as ever. And sadly they will likely be there to sign up for the next debacle that comes down the pike.

I much prefer the headlong retreat proposed by Congressional Democrats, rather than the plan for phased withdrawal based on governmental and security benchmarks that the Administration appears to have been following for the last 18 months or so.
