"Soon We'll Say Goodbye/Then We'll Work Until We Die"

M
y twenty-fifth high school reunion is a week from tomorrow.

I'm getting ready by listening to the superb song "Prom Theme" by Fountains of Wayne. A pitch-perfect rendition of (somebody else's) memories of high school.

An excerpt from the lyrics:

Here we are at last
The moment soon will pass
We'll go our separate ways
We'll vanish in the haze
We'll never be the same
We'll forget each other's names
We'll grow old and lose our hair
It's all downhill from there

But tonight we'll reach for the stars
We'll rent expensive cars
And dream our dreams
Of a perfect night
And we'll sing our prom theme

The music is reminiscent of an over-produced "Let It Be"-era McCartney ballad. Exquisite.

I take it that from your mentions of Fountains of Wayne over the past months on the blog that your a fan of well-crafted power-pop songs. In that vein, I recommend a band who I think you might very much enjoy: The New Pornographers. They are an amazing power-pop group based out of Vancouver. Their latest album is Twin Cinema, and I highly recommend it.

Utopia Parkway. One of the most underrated albums of the last ten years.
