Now This Just Stinks.
"Hawaii soldiers like Nosaka and Ono were shipped to jungle areas in Mississippi, where the dogs would chase them. With padded clothing for protection, they were also told to wear pieces of meat around their neck so the dogs would lunge at their throat."

I wonder what Mr. Masugi would say about this.

I thought this was common knowledge but have been surprised to find out it is not. I first read about it in the 1970's (I can't recall the book at the moment).

Pvt. Raymond Nosaka , B Co/100th Inf Bn;
Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge
Sgt Tokuji Ono, B Co/100th Inf. Bn;
Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge
I wonder Ono was a Sgt then... sounds like the sort of call for volunteers that Sgts don't go for :)
Timing would probably have been sometime between Mar. and Jul. 43; it sounds like the 100th Bn was getting a bit bored and restless around then. As I understand it, most of the 100th were former national guard, who were already trained. This may have been part of a bunch of stuff to keep em busy whilst the 442nd came up to speed.

Tokuji Ono is my grandfather. His leg was injured in battle by a grenade.

Tokuji Ono was my Principal while I was a math teacher at Kalakaua Intermediate in the early 1970s and was and I am sure is an honorable man. If he said, it happened. Best Regards. Bill Hager.
