CAP Smear?

I
n March of 1984, the magazine of the Concerned Alumni of Princeton ("CAP") published an article that identified a female Princeton freshman by name and divulged information about her sex life.

Controversy about the article in CAP's magazine drew national attention, garnering two separate articles in the New York Times.

One hopes that this notorious and well-publicized incident was not among the reasons for which Sam Alito bragged about being a CAP member a year later when he applied for a job as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General.

The university's dispute with the parents of a student appears to be a legitimate news story; I don't understand why the story ought not have been published as you give no argument. D'Souza admits the paper's error in publishing the student's name in a second story.

I don't understand how this reflects on Alito either. If this is the worst you can dig up on CAP, the group appears to be just another campus conservative group.

In my view, "law professor" is a title that has no more credibility than "liberal talking head." An argument as spurious as this is something I'd expect from Al Franken or Michael Moore. One might think that special carefulness would be used to attack one's former boss, but politics trumps all I guess.

Reg, you're an idiot.

First of all, claiming that publishing the name was a mistake does not make it one.

Second, CAP was well-known as a bunch of racist, sexist bigots who wanted to turn back the clock and get rid of the women and minorities at Princeton. That Alito was a member, and was proud of it, is shocking, and IMHO disqualifies him from the Supreme Court.

Let's all just refer to him as Elito, after all that is who he is.
