Going Underground

took my daughters caving this weekend. We went to Roberts Cave in Sugar Grove, Virginia. It is a fabulous cave for beginning spelunkers (like myself and my kids). Easy to access, fairly level on the inside, enough tight squeezes to keep things fun, relatively little water, and lots and lots of beautiful formations. Plus, Roberts Cave is on federal land, so you don't have to get a landowner's permssion to enter it.

Here are the girls, looking down on me from a little perch they'd found and climbed up to.

Here is a bat we found hanging from the wall. Contrary to what you may have heard, bats are actually very cute. They're like little mice with big ears, tiny little faces, and wings. (OK, maybe that doesn't sound so cute. But they are.)

And here I am, emerging from the cave through an opening that is pretty narrow. (Now that I think of it, I found it slightly narrower than it was when I came through three years ago. Especially around my mid-section. I guess the rocks have shifted or something.)

I've been to Sugar Grove several times but I have never heard of the cave. Where is it located?

It's no more than a half mile from town center, just behind the trail work camp. Email me if you'd like more specific directions.

Caving is sure fun. This year i have been to Karstorama, Speliofest and Wormfest. I missed crawathon. These are real events here around kentucky, This weekend near you is Old Timers Reunion in Elkins, WV. But that is more party oriented.
