Bravo times two? No, sir. No hoorahs from my corner. The Catholic Church's geologic timetable in righting wrongs and make the right gestures have earned little respect from me.

This is an insular, exclusive organization, more deontological than principled, less compassionate than dogmatic, and less ecumenical than this recent gesture would have us believe.

And as a student of history you should well know that it will take much more than an afternoon at the synogague to correct the sins of omission committed by an apathetic church during World War II.

Yes, the church "rescued" many Italian Jews, but they failed everywhere else, except for notable instances involving clergy working outside the sanction of the Vatican.

As a Christian, I welcome Pope Benedict's outreach in attending this memorial, but will suspend my congratulatory utterances until the church codifies more substantial rescue policies.

Otherwise, what's the use?
