Maybe The Best Offense Is A Good Defense?

M
y local team, the Carolia Hurricanes, have just picked up two defensemen--one of them the #3 pick in the NHL draft. Great news, that.

Just one question for management: how are the 'Canes planning on scoring goals? My understanding is that you need a few of those occasionally to win hockey games.

Scoring has been out of style in the NHL for the last decade or so. Goal scoring is a sign of a team that's too offensively minded. They're supposed to trap, trap, trap. I suspect NHL coaches make their teams do extra ladders in practice for each goal scored in a game.

Yes, Ian, but in a league of low scoring, the Hurricanes are particularly bad in this department.

They're counting on the two Erics: Cole and Staal.

So that's two lines; now what are they going to do for the other half of the hockey game?

More to the point, what about goal tending?

you think you've got it bad? try rooting for the

chicago blackhawks. at least the canes are trying to make a decent team.

It appears that whole scoring in the NHL is up 41% in the first week of the season the Canes haven't yet learned to find the back of the net. I'm still hopeful.
