And Each and Every One of You Is Special

H
it 500K on the old sitemeter tonight. It's wildly inaccurate--undercounts by a mile. Still, it's a nifty little milestone.

What's the difference between "visits" and "page views"?

Also, is there a site traffic program that can be set to give statistics excluding the webmaster's own visits, etc. for not too much $ and hassle?

Here is Site Meter's definition of 'page views' and 'visits'; "When you are browsing a site, every time you follow a link, it is treated as a single "page view". Site Meter defines a "visit" as a series of page views by one person with no more than 30 minutes in between page views."

Site Meter's 'visits' and Urchin's 'sessions' are actually pretty close in definition and after looking at the urchin stats for IsThatLegal, I think I've found the problem. The main difference is being caused by including the rss feed in Urchin's numbers vs Site Meter's numbers that don't include rss feeds. Removing the rss count will drop the Urchin numbers in half and put them pretty close to Site Meter's. I think the remainder of the difference is caused by pages on the site that currently aren't including the Site Meter counter on them.
